It all began with 2 very discouraged good friends in design school, in the thick of their final year project, in the year 2011. (For some context, this was the age before pinterest, before smart phones became a commodity, when whatsapp had to be paid for.) Trying to make sense of everything that was happening, they had spent many days (and nights) wondering about where life would take them post-thesis, and what to do with their knowledge from school. They were curious about what it would mean to apply design thinking into a different realm - one with celebrations, and starting with spaces. It was never about being “entrepreneurs” right from the start, only pure naivety and a great desire to “do their own thing” - designing and crafting.

Soon after, it meant working out from their bedrooms / respective homes / kitchens / dining tables until they were graciously offered a cosy space in Weiyan’s mother’s (then) new engineering office studio. With that came courage and confidence to grow the team in a neutral space free of the distractions of a bed, a television, and the pressure of having to clear the table for dinner daily. And this also meant that the pioneer elves made up primarily of the Li + Chen siblings and their closest friends (much love to you all!) could finally retire and have their weekends back.

...Fast forward to the present, and In Merry Motion is now made up of a very cosy core team with a wonderful group of part-time elves who have made their indelible mark on the studio in more ways than one. (So thankful for each new season with you guys).

2018 marks a shift of their offerings as a studio; away from designing and crafting for weddings and celebrations, and towards developing themselves as a craft nest. A regular offering of studio-based craft workshops, and helping to kickstart craft projects in our craft lab sessions. We’ve also started a studio merchandise line to spread the merry-ment. We’re not sure how things would unfold but…. Eyes to the skies. :)
